The Church’s rationale for persecuting Galileo may be considered as two-fold: as an attack on its theology, and on its authority. His vehement defense of Copernican heliocentrism contradicted both the traditional interpretations of the Bible, as well as long-accepted Aristotelian philosophy. What exacerbated matters was the Church already being on the defensive due to the ongoing Reformation. Specifically, it was perhaps Galileo’s argument that science and observation should trump mandated authority on matters of explaining nature, using his telescopic examinations of the phases of Venus to support his claims. Additionally, he had previously been warned against speaking to the teachings of Copernicus. The final nail in the coffin was his thinly veiled portrayal of the pope as a buffoonish character in his 1632 book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief Worlds Systems, which ultimately resulted in his being called to trial and forced to recant before the Inquisition.

Forced into permanent house arrest, Galileo would later focus on solving physics-related problems, where he would put his knowledge of experimentation to use in his work involving falling bodies to show that nature could be described mathematically. When considering the work of his contemporaries such as Francis Bacon and Renè Descartes, we can see the foundations of our modern Scientific Method. While Bacon emphasized inductive reasoning through copious observation and experimentation, Descartes called for a healthy dose of skepticism, believing knowledge ought begin with doubt and logical reasoning. Galileo, it may be thought, was the happy middle ground to these approaches.
