Two crucial developments of science originated in India in the fields of mathematics and medicine. Firstly, our utilization of a decimal-based number system was first used by Indian mathematicians. As was also, the practice of using zero as a placeholder. Another was the highly advanced medical knowledge helped Indian physicians introduce procedures such as cataract surgery to the world. The Sushruta Samhita also contained methods for bone setting, and the use of proper sanitation for medical diagnosis.

There may be any number of reasons why there has been little discussion of Indian contribution to the world of science and technology. It may be that historians chose to emphasize the work of the Europeans, overshadowing the influences of India and the East. Another may be that if early Indian culture passed traditions down through generations, some of these practices could have become lost to time. Yet another possibility is that some of this knowledge might have been absorbed into and later transmitted through Islamic culture towards the Medieval period.
